You’ve poured time, money, and effort into your website. It looks great. Your friends say it’s professional. You’re even showing up on Google for a few things. But still… no clients. Or very few.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. I speak to many business owners in the same boat – and usually, the reasons are fixable.
This post breaks down the most common (and often hidden) reasons your website isn’t bringing in clients – and how to fix them.

1. You’re Targeting the Wrong Keywords
Many websites attract visitors but not the right visitors. That’s often down to unstrategic keyword targeting.
Example: A freelance designer ranking for “what is a logo” might get lots of hits… from people who aren’t ready to hire. But ranking for “logo designer for wellness brands” will attract clients who are actively looking.
Fix It:
- Do keyword research with buyer intent in mind.
- Use tools like AnswerThePublic, Ubersuggest, or Google Search Console to see what people are really searching.
- Prioritise terms that suggest someone is ready to buy, e.g. “hire a copywriter for therapists” instead of “what does a copywriter do?”
“75% of marketers say SEO-optimised content delivers better results.” — Keevee, Content Marketing Statistics for 2025
This stat reinforces just how important it is to align your content with solid SEO practices. When your keywords match what your ideal clients are actually searching for, you’re far more likely to attract the right visitors to your site which turn into enquiries. If they don’t, your content might rank, but it won’t convert.
Want content that ranks and converts but not sure where to start? My Keyword Research Guide will show you exactly how to find the right keywords for your business - without the jargon or guesswork.
2. Your Homepage Doesn’t Tell Visitors What You Do (Fast Enough)
A confusing or vague homepage is a conversion killer. If someone lands on your site and can’t immediately tell what you offer or who it’s for, they’ll bounce away to find a website that does.
Fix It:
- Start your homepage with a clear positioning statement: Who you help, what you do, and the result they get.
- Use headings that mirror what people are searching for.
- Don’t be clever – be clear.
According to the Nielsen Norman Group, users often leave web pages in 10–20 seconds – but pages with a clear value proposition can hold attention much longer.
Clear messaging, fast loading, and strategic headings are key. But it’s also about how well your homepage is optimised for both humans and search engines.
Not sure where to start? My guide, Boost Your Homepage SEO: Steps to Rank Higher and Engage Visitors, walks you through exactly how to improve your homepage content and structure - so you can turn more of your visitors into enquiries.
3. You’re Not Showing Up for Local or Niche Searches
Many business owners miss out by ignoring local SEO or specific niches. If you’re a therapist in Bristol, you don’t need to rank nationally – you need to rank when someone searches “trauma therapist Bristol.”
Fix It:
- Add your location to your page titles, headings, and copy.
- Set up and optimise your Google Business Profile – it’s one of the easiest ways to boost local visibility.
- Include specific services and local keywords on your site.
A BrightLocal survey found that 78% of local mobile searches result in an offline purchase. That’s huge missed potential if you’re invisible locally.

4. You’re Not Building Topical Authority
Google rewards sites that are seen as experts. If your website only has a couple of pages, it’s hard to rank well – especially in competitive spaces.
Fix It:
- Create useful, focused blog content around your main services.
- Answer common questions your clients ask (or should be asking).
- Link between related pages and posts to help Google understand your content structure.
Google’s Search Quality Evaluator Guidelines emphasise E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. That’s not just jargon – it’s what helps your site rank and convert.
If you're not sure how to show E-E-A-T on your own site, my helpful guide breaks it down step-by-step, so you can build trust and earn higher-quality rankings.
5. Your Site Is Technically Holding You Back
Slow loading times, broken links, or poor mobile usability can all impact rankings and user experience. You may not notice these issues – but your visitors (and Google) do.
Fix It:
- Use PageSpeed Insights to test performance.
- Ensure your site is mobile-friendly (over 60% of traffic comes from mobile devices).
- Fix technical SEO issues with an audit (I can help with that if you’re unsure).
“A 1-second delay in page load time has been shown to cause a 7 percent loss in conversion and 11 percent fewer page views” – BigCommerce
Site speed isn’t just a technical detail – it has a direct impact on your bottom line. Even small delays can cost you valuable leads, so if your site’s running slow, it’s more than just an annoyance – it’s holding your business back.
If you’re not sure where to start, my SEO Website Audits give you clear, practical direction on exactly what your site needs to perform better - and lay the solid foundation your SEO truly needs.
6. You Haven’t Built Enough Trust
Even if your site’s getting traffic and your services are crystal clear, a lack of trust signals can quietly hold people back from enquiring.
Fix It:
- Add real testimonials and case studies with names, photos, and outcomes.
- Use trust badges, professional memberships, or media mentions.
- Include a photo of you (or your team) — it really does make a difference!
- And don’t underestimate the power of reviews.

Reviews are one of the simplest (and most effective) ways to build that trust.

7. Your Call to Action Is Too Weak (or Missing)
You’ve got someone interested – now what? If your site doesn’t guide people towards the next step, they’ll often click away.
Fix It:
- Use clear calls to action like “Book a Free Call”, “Get a Quote”, or “Start Your Project”.
- Place your CTA in multiple spots — header, footer, and at the end of key pages.
- Keep forms short, friendly, and friction-free.
“70% of small business websites lack a clear call to action on their homepage.” — Small Business Trends, 2024
That means the majority of businesses are missing a simple but powerful opportunity to guide their visitors. It’s a common – and costly – mistake, but one that’s easy to fix once you know what’s missing.
