Updating old blog posts is often overlooked, yet it’s key to keeping your website relevant, authoritative, and appealing to both search engines and readers.

A recent poll I conducted shows that 66% of business owners have blog posts older than 5 years, and 35% have content over a decade old. This highlights a widespread challenge: outdated content.

When you look at your blog archive, do you spot articles that once attracted many visitors but now seem outdated or out of touch with your current brand or audience?

Old blog posts are such a gold mine.

I’ve been updating my and my client’s blog posts recently and we’re seeing fantastic results in terms of ranking and increased visitor numbers.

Why Updating Old Blog Posts is Crucial

  1. Keeping Content Relevant and Engaging
Your audience’s needs and interests evolve, and so should your content. Updating old blog posts ensures that your material stays relevant, informative, and engaging for your readers. This not only maintains their interest but also positions you as a go-to source for up-to-date information.
  2. Enhancing Trust and Credibility
Consistently refreshed content builds trust. When your audience sees that you’re regularly updating your posts, it reinforces your blog’s reliability and authority, fostering stronger reader loyalty and higher engagement.
  3. Boosting Performance
Search engines prioritise fresh, relevant content. By revisiting and updating older posts, you send positive signals to search engines, which can improve your rankings. Additionally, it’s an opportunity to incorporate new keywords and refine your content for current search intents, keeping your blog competitive.

What is the Lifespan of a Blog Post?

The lifespan of a blog post varies but typically peaks in the first few weeks after publication. Unless the content is evergreen, its relevance can decline over time. Regular updates breathe new life into older posts, extending their usefulness and maintaining their value for your audience. This approach ensures that your blog remains a relevant resource over the long term.

1. Identify the Right Posts to Refresh

Not every post needs an update, so focus on those with outdated information, declining traffic, or potential for better performance.

For help, dive into Google Search Console (GSC):

  • Navigate to the Search Results tab
  • In the Date filter, use the Compare tab to compare the last 3 months to the previous period.
Use Google Search Console to identify the right posts to refresh
  • Enable only the Total Clicks tile.
  • In the Pages tab, sort the Clicks Difference column in descending order.

This will highlight pages that have lost the most traffic recently – prime candidates for a refresh to regain their previous performance.

This is where your biggest opportunities lie.

2. Refresh and Enrich the Content

Keeping your blog posts up-to-date is vital for both maintaining audience interest and preserving your SEO value. Here’s how to do it effectively:

  • Add New Insights: Infuse your content with fresh perspectives and up-to-date information. This can include new case studies, expert quotes, or emerging best practices in your industry.
  • Update Statistics: Outdated statistics can weaken your credibility. Replace them with the most recent data to maintain the relevance and accuracy of your post.
  • Check and Fix Links: Broken or outdated links can frustrate readers and harm your SEO. Ensure all internal and external links are still functional and lead to authoritative sources.
  • Address New Trends and Developments: If your industry has evolved or new trends have emerged since the post was published, weave these into your content. This not only keeps your post timely but also positions you as a forward-thinking authority in your field.
  • Upgrade Visuals: Replace outdated images, incorporate infographics, or videos that align with the updated content and ensure they are high quality, relevant, and optimised for SEO. Visual elements can help clarify complex ideas and keep your audience engaged.
  • Expand the Content: If new subtopics have arisen since you first published the post, consider adding them to provide a more comprehensive resource. This can increase the post’s value and longevity.

By refreshing and enriching your content, you ensure it remains a valuable, high-performing asset that continues to attract and engage your audience while improving your search engine rankings.

Please note: It’s important not to simply add new information just for the sake of ranking. It needs to be something that readers really will find helpful.

3. Enhance SEO Optimisation

Optimising your refreshed content for SEO is key to extending its reach and effectiveness.
Here’s how to do it:

Reassess Your Keywords:

  • Focus on long-tail keywords that are less competitive but highly relevant to your content. These are perfect for blog posts and can help you attract a more targeted audience.
  • Start by revisiting the keywords you originally targeted. Use tools like Google’s free Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, SEMrush, or Keywords Everywhere to analyse current search trends and find relevant keywords that align with user intent.

Update Meta Tags:

  • Review and update your meta titles and descriptions. Ensure they include your primary keyword and are compelling enough to encourage clicks.
  • Keep your meta title within 50-60 characters and your meta description around 155-160 characters to avoid truncation in search results.
  • Use action words and a clear value proposition to make your meta tags stand out in search engine results pages (SERPs).

Optimise for On-Page SEO:

  • Ensure your primary keyword is included naturally in key locations like the title, headers (H1, H2, etc.), URL, and the first 100 words of the content.
  • Use internal linking to guide readers to related content on your website, improving both user experience and SEO by spreading link equity.

Improve Load Speed:

  • Page speed is a ranking factor. Compress images, leverage browser caching, and minimise CSS and JavaScript files to reduce load times. Tools like Google PageSpeed Insights can help identify areas for improvement.

Ensure Mobile-Friendliness:

  • With the majority of searches happening on mobile devices, your content must be responsive. Check how your page looks on your mobile devices to ensure it performs well.

By enhancing your SEO optimisation, you ensure that your updated content is not only relevant to your audience but also visible to a wider one, driving more traffic and achieving better search engine rankings.

4. Boost Readability

Making your content easy to read and understand is key to keeping your audience engaged.
Here’s how you can boost readability:

  • Use Subheadings: Break your content into digestible sections with clear subheadings. This structure not only improves readability but also helps with SEO by allowing search engines to better understand your content.
  • Incorporate Bullet Points and Lists: Use bullet points or numbered lists to simplify complex information. This makes key points stand out and is easier for readers to scan, especially when they’re looking for specific information quickly.
  • Write in a Conversational Tone: Engage your readers by writing as if you’re speaking directly to them. Avoid jargon and overly technical language unless absolutely necessary. A conversational tone makes your content more relatable and enjoyable to read.
  • Ensure Content is Skimmable: Many readers skim through articles, so make sure your key points are easy to find. Use bold text, short paragraphs, and concise sentences to highlight important information. This approach ensures that even skimmers can grasp the main ideas quickly.
  • Use Visuals to Break Up Text: Add images, infographics, or videos to break up long blocks of text. Visuals not only enhance engagement but also help explain complex ideas more effectively. Ensure that all visuals are high quality and relevant to the content.
  • Optimise Font and Spacing: Choose a readable font size and ensure there’s enough white space between lines and paragraphs. Proper spacing reduces eye strain and makes your content more inviting to read.
  • Consider Readability Tools: Use tools like Hemingway Editor or Grammarly to assess the readability of your content. These tools can help you simplify language, shorten sentences, and maintain a reading level appropriate for your audience.

By focusing on readability, you make your content more accessible and engaging, encouraging readers to stay on your page longer and absorb the information you’re sharing.

5. Request Indexing

After updating your post, it’s important to request Google to re-index the page so that the changes can be reflected in search results more quickly. Here’s how:

  • Go to Google Search Console.
  • Enter the URL of your updated post in the “URL Inspection” tool.
  • Click “Request Indexing” to prompt Google to re-crawl the page.

This step is important for ensuring that your updates are recognised by search engines quickly. Requesting that Google re-index updated pages can help your site appear in relevant Google search results so more people find your content.

6. Promote the Updated Post

Once you’ve refreshed your content, promoting it effectively is crucial for maximising its impact. Here’s how you can make sure your updated post reaches a wider audience:

  • Share on Social Media: Announce your updated post across all your social channels. Highlight the new insights or improvements to grab attention. Consider creating different types of posts (e.g., infographics, short videos) tailored to each platform to increase engagement.
  • Feature in Your Newsletter: Include a section in your email newsletter dedicated to the updated post. Mention why it’s worth revisiting, especially if the updates include new data or actionable tips. This keeps your subscribers engaged and drives visitors to your site.
  • Outreach to Influencers: Reach out to industry influencers or partners who might find the updated content valuable. They could share it with their audience, expanding your reach. Personalised outreach explaining how the content aligns with their interests can be particularly effective.
  • Re-Share Across Your Website: Add internal links to your updated post from other relevant pages on your site. This not only helps with SEO but also guides readers to the updated content. Consider featuring it on your homepage or in a popular blog section.
  • Monitor and Adjust: After promotion, monitor the performance of your updated post. Use tools like Google Analytics and Search Console to track traffic, engagement, and ranking shifts. If the post isn’t performing as expected, consider additional promotional efforts or tweaks to the content.

By effectively promoting your updated content, you can significantly increase its visibility, drive more traffic, and ultimately see better results from your efforts.
