Yes, SEO still works in the age of AI.
And not only that, ethical, user-focused SEO works better than ever.
Despite the rise of AI Overviews and answer-based search, Google still relies on credible, expert content to generate its responses. Pages are still ranked. Sources are still selected. And real people still click when content clearly matches what they’re searching for.
SEO has never been about gaming algorithms. It has always been about relevance, clarity, and trust – helping the right people find the right information at the right moment.
That hasn’t changed.
What has changed is how obvious it’s now become who’s doing SEO properly.

“Does SEO still work now that AI answers everything?”
I’m asked this same question almost daily, by coaches, therapists, photographers, tradespeople, consultants, and founders across the UK. And honestly, I understand the worry.
Search has changed more in the last 18 months than in the previous 10 years combined.
People still search.
But they’re not always seeing a list of websites anymore.
They’re seeing AI-generated answers from Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and others.
So yes, the game has changed.
But no, SEO is not dead. It has evolved, but the fundamentals haven’t changed.
And the businesses who adapt now are the ones who’ll win visibility long-term.
This guide breaks down:
- Search Has Shifted from “find information” to “get an answer”
- So… does SEO still work? Yes, but only the kind that deserves to.
- Why AI chooses one website and not another
- Your website now needs to do two jobs, not one

First: Search Has Shifted from “find information” to “get an answer”
Let’s imagine a typical search moment. Someone Googles:
- “Why does my back hurt after running?”
- “How do I know if I need a website redesign?”
- “What’s the difference between coaching and counselling?”
- “Best places to stay in Devon with kids”
Instead of 10 blue links, they see:
- a crisp AI summary
- 1–3 citations (on a good day)
- sometimes… nothing at all
They might scroll to TikTok, click once, or not click at all.
The click isn’t dying, it’s becoming more selective.
People only click when the source feels:
This is the real shift:
SEO used to be about ranking. Now it’s about being chosen by AI and by humans.
And the websites being chosen share three qualities:
- clear answers
- strong, simple structure
- credibility signals that reinforce trust
This is exactly where ethical, user-centred SEO thrives.
Mini Rant: What AI Has Not Changed (and why the “AI SEO” hype is exhausting)
Let’s be honest.
AI hasn’t killed SEO, but it has created a lot of noise.
Every week there’s a new acronym, a new “AI-optimised framework,” and a new hustler promising to “get you to #1 in ChatGPT” (still… not a thing).
Here’s the truth, said plainly:
Good SEO has always been about creating relevant, clear, unique and helpful content that answers what people are searching for. Not tricks. Not hacks. Not shiny new labels.
AI hasn’t rewritten that rule, it’s simply made it more obvious who’s been doing real SEO all along.
What frustrates me (and many other SEOs, quietly working away helping real businesses) is this:
Some people are rebranding basic SEO principles with sparkly AI language because panic sells.
But you don’t need a reinvention.
You don’t need a new acronym.
And you definitely don’t need to pay an extra £500 a month for “AI optimisation” when it’s really just… ethical SEO done properly.
AI search is real. The hype around it is optional.
This has been confirmed directly by Google.
In a recent interview, Nick Fox, SVP of Knowledge & Information at Google, explained that optimising for AI search is the same as optimising for traditional Google Search. His advice was simple: build great websites and publish genuinely helpful content.
As Nick Fox put it, the way to perform well in Google’s AI experiences is “the same” as performing well in traditional search because it’s still SEO at its core.
You can read or watch the full interview here: Google confirms AI search optimisation is the same as SEO.
So… does SEO still work? Yes, but only the kind that deserves to.
The SEO built on shortcuts, keyword stuffing, clickbait headings, or “rank in 7 days!” nonsense?
Gone. AI has made that approach irrelevant.
But SEO that focuses on real people, real intent, and real clarity?
It is now more powerful than ever.
This is the approach I’ve always taken:
✔ Ethical SEO
No hype. No manipulation.
Just clear communication, trustworthy content, and websites built for humans.
✔ Search Intent + Buyer Intent
Not just “what people search for”, but:
- Why they’re searching
- What they need at that moment
- What would make them click
- What would make them take the next step
✔ Helping AI Understand Your Pages
AI tools rely on:
- direct answers
- plain English
- clean structure
- clear headings
- evidence
- simple definitions
- consistent topical signals
SEO hasn’t died, it’s moved back to what actually works.
Why AI chooses one website and not another
AI isn’t looking for “the most optimised” page.
It’s looking for the clearest, most authoritative, most helpful one.
It chooses content that demonstrates:
- clarity
- structure
- specificity
- authority
- trust
Here’s a simple example.
A vague statement like:
“I help businesses improve their visibility using ethical SEO…”
…is far less useful to AI than:
“I help service-based businesses across the UK increase enquiries by creating content that answers real client questions, matches buyer intent, and builds trust through clear, structured pages.”
This is AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) in practice, and most businesses aren’t doing it yet.
Your website now needs to do two jobs, not one
Search hasn’t just changed how people find information, it’s changed what your website needs to do once they find you. In the past, SEO had one goal: get you seen. Today, your site has to work twice as hard. It has to give AI enough clarity and structure to confidently cite you and it has to give real humans enough trust and relevance to choose you. If one of those pieces is missing, visibility doesn’t turn into enquiries, and enquiries are what actually matter.
1. Be the source AI chooses
This requires:
- direct answers
- structured content
- short paragraphs
- definitions
- examples
- FAQs
- expertise
- internal linking
2. Give humans a reason to click after they see you cited
This requires:
- trust
- warmth
- proof
- relevance
- a clear next step
In other words:
AI can help people discover you.
Your website still needs to make them choose you.
Real Example: What This Looks Like in Practice
A therapy team in Edinburgh came to me last year.
They had:
- a good service
- a beautiful brand
- a professional website
- almost no visibility
They rarely ranked, never appeared in AI answers, and enquiries were sporadic.
After applying intent-led, ethical SEO:
- clearer content
- structured explanations
- direct answers
- expert context
- stronger local signals
- calm, human clarity
They now receive 3–5 new enquiries every week.
Their diaries are full.
And as they put it, they’re now “quietly becoming the site AI cites.”
This is SEO working exactly as it should.
AEO + SEO: The three core elements every service business needs.
These work for coaches, therapists, trades, physios, photographers, consultants, holiday parks… anyone with a service.
1. Answer the question directly
Skip the warmup.
Skip the fluff.
Say the thing.
Example:
AI loves directness.
Humans do too.
2. Use clean, simple structure
Think:
- headings
- short paragraphs
- bullet points
- logical flow
- micro-definitions
This helps humans, AI, screen readers… everyone.
3. Add specificity
Include:
- who you help
- where you work
- what you specialise in
- what results look like
- what makes your approach distinctive
This is what makes your content “quotable.”
6 quick wins to make your site AI-friendly
1. Rewrite the first 50–70 words of one service page
Start with a clear, direct answer to a real question your ideal client actually types into search, not background, not context.
For example:
Instead of: “People experience X in different ways…”
Try: “X happens when… Here’s what it usually feels like.”
This one tweak massively improves your chances of being selected for AI Overviews and other AI search engines.
2. Add 2–3 FAQs to your homepage
Homepage FAQs are high-value real estate for AI.
Use 50–70 word answers that:
- address common concerns
- use everyday language
- include a gentle next step
Think: “How does this work?”, “What should I expect?”, “How long does it take?”
These help AI understand your expertise and help humans feel confident to get in touch.
3. Add a mini-definition to one page
AI loves clarity and short, clean definitions.
A good micro-definition is:
- under 25 words
- specific
- written in simple language
Example:
Buyer intent: what someone is actively trying to understand or decide when they search (e.g. comparing providers, researching a problem, or ready to take action).
Add one definition per page and your site becomes far more “quotable.”
4. Break long paragraphs into short ones
AI, and humans, skim.
If your paragraphs run longer than 4–5 lines, split them into natural steps or sections.
This helps AI identify:
- answers
- definitions
- lists
- key concepts
…and it makes your writing feel calmer, clearer, and more confident.
5. Add location and specialism to your footer or page endings
Even if you serve people online, AI needs “context anchors” to understand who you help.
Add one grounding sentence such as:
“If you’re looking for ethical SEO support in the UK, I help service-based businesses attract the right clients with clear, user-centred strategy.”
This boosts local and thematic relevance immediately.
6. Add one internal link
Internal links show AI how your site fits together.
Link related topics – e.g. from your “SEO Strategy” page to your “Content Writing” page.
This:
- strengthens topical authority
- helps AI understand your expertise clusters
- improves user journeys
One link per page is enough to make a noticeable difference.
Small changes.
Huge impact.
What success looks like today
Success isn’t “rank #1 for a random keyword.”
It’s:
- More aligned enquiries
People saying: “Your explanation was the only one that made sense.” - Higher impressions, even if clicks stay steady
This means AI is citing you. - Steady, meaningful visibility
Not spikes. Not drama.
Just consistent discovery by the right people. - Increasing trust in your brand
Because your content feels calm, clear, confident, and genuinely helpful.
This is SEO… and it’s very human.
Final thoughts: SEO isn’t dead, it’s finally doing what it was always meant to do
SEO isn’t dead. It hasn’t been replaced by AI, and it doesn’t need reinventing.
What’s changed is that clarity, relevance, and trust are no longer optional, they’re essential.
If your website answers real questions clearly, demonstrates genuine expertise, and helps people feel confident to take the next step, it will continue to be visible to Google, to AI, and to the humans you actually want to work with.
That’s not the future of SEO.
It’s what good SEO has always been.
