Blogging can seem like a LOT of effort.
And even if you have good intentions, when you sit down to actually start writing, the blank page can put you off – and you find yourself getting nowhere fast!
But are you aware how seriously good blogging is for your SEO, let alone your business as a whole?
Although it may be hard work (unless of course you love to write), there are some very lucrative payoffs for overcoming the pain, and getting a regular supply of good quality posts onto your website.
Read on and find out just how powerful a blog can be…
Business Blogging Statistics
As a starting point, I want to share some statistics with you that were published by HubSpot a little while back. I think you’ll agree they make a good case for the power of a blog.
- Businesses that blog receive 55% more visitors to their website than those that don’t!
- In addition, the average company that blogs also has: 97% more inbound links and 434% more indexed pages.
Are you starting to see the value of business blogging?
The results above suggest that blogging can translate into more potential customers. In addition, because of the additional indexing and links, blogging is also a powerful SEO tool.
- Boost your SEO
The reason a good blog benefits your SEO is because of the user experience a blog creates.
Remember, Google is all about rewarding businesses who provide a great user experience, and useful, interesting fresh relevant content does just that. Now the key here is the quality aspect. A blog written to please the Googlebots is not going to boost your organic traffic. In fact, spammy content that’s stuffed with keywords and poorly thought through could actually harm your SEO.
But if you write content that genuinely addresses the concerns, issues and questions that your potential customers are seeking answers for, Google will reward you.
But how does blogging actually translate into SEO juice?
Well in simple terms, each piece of content that you post is an additional page that Google can index and rank. But more than that, if your content is interesting and attracts the attention of a wider audience, your blog posts will be shared and attract more inbound links. Again, as long as these links are not spammy, these connections will strengthen the authority of your domain as a whole, because high quality links suggest you have credibility in your area of specialism.
- Attract more organic traffic
Now I’m guessing that you have a website because you want to use it as a tool to attract more customers.
A blog can help you do that too – for a few reasons. Firstly, a blog provides a richer visitor experience. Your home page and about us page etc. will give visitors a good overview of what your business is all about. But a blog goes much deeper. It’s another opportunity to reveal your personality and your knowledge. And it can help customers get a feel for your expertise and what it will be like to work with you.
Fresh content can send you new visitors too. Remember, links to your blog posts can be shared on social media, which in turn can amplify your reach and put your business in front of new people.
And don’t forget the long tail searches. You can use a blog to address very specific customer queries. Then when people type these into Google, they could stumble upon your website.
- Consider guest blogging
Posting blog content on other sites can also be a lucrative way to attract more traffic and increase your visibility and authority. To start with, make sure you sign up for Google authorship. That way any content you do write, wherever it gets published, will be credited back to you.
It used to be that guest blogging was a great way to get links and boost your overall site’s authority. But just recently, Google has started to clamp down on this. But that doesn’t mean guest blogging is dead. Guest blogging still works if you write for good quality sites where your target market hangs out. In turn, featuring on top-notch blogs with an engaged audience could help your credibility and your visitor numbers soar.
How to get the most from a new blog post
Blogging can have a powerful impact on your business and to help you get it right I’ve put together some of my top business blogging tips to ensure you get the best value from anything that you write.
Firstly, don’t overdo the keyword focus! Write for your visitors first (not Google) and you’ll naturally find your desired keywords will become woven into your writing – remember Google’s Hummingbird Algorithm? Also consider anchor text and internal links. This means identifying other content on your website that’s relevant, and linking to this via the right keywords. As well as enriching the visitor experience (by giving them the opportunity to go off on tangents and explore a subject in more depth), these links will also give Google a clear idea of the overall content strategy of your website.
Feel free to link to other sites on the web too – especially if you’re referring to a particular argument, statement or specifics. These links allow you to share your sources and show credit where it’s due.
And when it comes to actually writing your blog post, think through what you’re going to say.
Here’s 7 blogging tips to help you:
- Always deliver useful, valuable, and original content
- Share and promote every blog post through your social media channels
- Don’t be afraid to be yourself – allow your own unique personality and ideas to shine through
- Be patient – good blog content takes time to create and you will need to invest a little effort to build your audience and stoke engagement
- Make it easy to share your posts by embedding social media network buttons onto your page
- Consider your structure and layout. This means including sub heads and bullet points for scanners – and remember that short sentences make for an easier read
- Invite people to comment so you can start a conversation with your audience
And one final thing.
If you’d really like to get benefits like these for your business, but you really can’t face the thought of writing a single word, find a good copywriter!
